This vowed religious observance was advocated by Sage Narad to Lord
Rama so that He could slay the demon Ravan.
After completion of this observance Rama attacked Lanka and finally slayed Ravan.
The female deity (devi) combated the demon (asur) Mahishasur for nine days from
the first (pratipada) to the ninth day (navama) and finally slayed him on the
ninth night. This victory is celebrated on the tenth day (dashami) and is called
Dasra (Dassera, Dasara). (This festival is also spelled as Navratra.)
