Spiritual significance of Jesus' birth

Jesus was born at a time when society was infested with spiritual ignorance and unrighteousness (superstition, greed, hatred, hypocrisy, etc.). The rulers were arrogant and unrighteous. Majority of people did not do spiritual practice, nor was there anyone to guide spiritual aspirants correctly on the spiritual path.

In the Holy Bible there are many references to Lord Jesus being born "to take away the sins of the world," as "a Savior to mankind."  These references are in the spiritual sense, implying that Lord Jesus came as a Spiritual guide (Guru) or Savior Form of God to guide people to Liberation from spiritual ignorance or ego (sin), which is the root cause of suffering. The Spiritual guide (Guru) or Savior Form of God is God's manifest form. It is for this reason that Lord Jesus is called the 'Son of God'. 'Sin' refers to the spiritual ignorance that gives one the sense that one is separate from God, Who is perpetually Blissful, preventing one from experiencing the soul or the part of the God principle present within each of us. Jesus explains this in Luke 17:21 when he says that "the Kingdom of God is within you."

The sense of separation from God is brought about by identifying oneself with one's senses, mind and intellect when in fact, one is essentially Divine.

Lord Jesus came to guide and grace people on the spiritual path, so that they can attain union with God by becoming like Him or attaining His divine qualities. That is why he says in Matthew 5:48, "Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect."

Through spiritual practice, which essentially means developing divine qualities such as perfection, spiritual love, efficiency, etc., and by practicing them in daily activities and situations, one's spiritual ignorance (ego) is steadily destroyed. Thus, one's soul or divinity shines through, as depicted in the below diagram.
