Responses to Husain’s Scheduled felicitation
by Maharashtra Governor on 2 February 2006

    M. F. Husain, the internationally reputed painter is going to be felicitated with the prestigious Roopadhar 2006 award by the Bombay Art Society, at the hands of Hon. Governor of Maharashtra, Mr. S.M. Krishna on 2 February 2006.

Hindus around the world have promptly expressed their protest of this felicitation by writing to the Maharashtra Governor and other concerned authorities, as follows. May their prompt, active participation in this protest inspire similar response worldwide from seekers and Hindus in particular.

Protest by Editor of the Hindu Voice periodical:

“To: The Governor of Maharashtra

Your Excellency,

By Honouring MF Hussain, a pervert who derives pleasure in hurting Hindus, you are insulting the 100 crore Hindus. In fact, Hussain who has drawn naked pictures of Hindu Gods and Goddesses, must be arrested for insulting Hindus.

The need of the hour is for a Law to punish any one who insults Hindu Gods, Goddesses, Gurus, Sants, etc. by depicting them in a bad light. I would humbly request you to kindly propose such a law, and get Mr. Hussain arrested under the law.

Can Hussain insult Muslims and Christians, in the same way he has done with Hindus? The same logic should be applied in the case of Hindus too. Hindus demand equal treatment, not appeasement.

Thank you.

A Monthly in English, voicing the concerns of Hindus”

An active protestor’s letter to the Governor:

To:
Mr. S. M. Krishna
Governor of Maharashtra

We heard that M. F. Husain, the internationally reputed painter is being felicitated with the prestigious Roopdhara 2006 award by the Bombay Art Society at Your Excellency’s hands on 2nd February 2006. It is very wrong to felicitate a painter who has abused the sentiments of a large part of indian society. Mr. Husain has drawn several derogatory paintings, as follows:

  • Painting of nude Goddess Durga astride the tiger
  • Derogatory painting of Shiv Parvati
  • Naked Hanuman sitting on a mountain
  • Obscene series on Hanuman
  • Naked Ganga and Yamuna relaxing in water
  • and many more, which one will not be able to see...

(See some of the paintings here.)

From the over 25000 signatures in the online protest campaign against of M. F. Husain’s paintings, one has to note that over 25000 people think that this art should not be allowed, as it hurts the feelings of Hindus.

So I request Your Excellency that please do not encourage such activities by involving yourself in such functions and help speed up the action against M. F. Husain for such derogatory art.

HE The Governor,

Have you seen, read, heard: One of the papers in Denmark, came out some cartoons / caricatures depicting the prophet in bad taste and the reaction in the Muslim world is explosive.

Do you not see that though MF Hussain claims to be a Indian (a celebrity artist at that) is blatantly abusing his freedom (worst than a criminal) because he knows there are spineless people in the government who will meekly felicitate him with prestigious Roopadhar 2006 award by the Bombay Art Society at the hands of Hon. Governor of Maharashtra, Mr. S.M. Krishna on 2 February 2006. What a irony!! Governor named KRISHNA - presenting a award to a "Chandaldemon" MF Hussain!!!

STOP THIS NOW - THE LEAST YOU CAN DO IS PROTEST AND DO NOT BE A PARTY, to this facilitation or whatever.

A Hindu (any one from Hindustan has to respect the sentiments of Hindus)

Shankar

Bravo Mr Krishna!

Mr. S.M. Krishna : I am an educated individual of the country (a graduate). Could you please answer the following questions as a Servant of the People of India :

  • Would you honour someone who would paint your daughter / wife / mother nude in the name of "Art"?

  • Are you aware that the police have 180 written complaints against MF Husain? Can you please shed some light as to why there is no action taken against him?

  • Do you choose to blindly ignore the complaints made?

  • Do you choose to hurt & insult Hindus by not initiating action and on the contrary felicitate MF Husain?

  • We Hindus are the majority - does that mean you take us for granted?

  • Has the Honorable President of India forwarded our letters to the Home Ministry for action? If yes then was "Felicitating MF Husain" the "action" instructed? If not then why this decision?

The main purpose of writing this e-mail is to Request you to strip off MF Husain of ALL his awards, arrest him and sentence him to life imprisonment, along with getting answers to the questions above.

Would appreciate a response failing which it would be understood that you choose to disregard your duty towards the people of India, meaning an automatic acceptance that you accept responsibility and authorization for any step that we Indians take in the future to uproot such acts.

Vande Mataram!
Warm Regards
Ajeya Mehta

To:
His Excellency Shri. S.M. Krishna,

Governor of Maharashtra

Dear Sir,

As a citizen, am i so powerless as to not make any impact on your decision that is a blow to spiritual seekers the world over?

Have you seen the filthy art painted by Hussain about deities in lewd positions?

It is sickening. Please do not felicitate that man with the Roopadhar award. He is a rogue who is robbing us of our spiritual wealth by making a mockery of it.

Please live up to the Name of Lord Krishna which is your name as well.

    Please stand up against Adharma.

I beg of you Sir to do what you know is right.

Please do not let your position in office bend you and make you forsake your dharma.

Do not allow yourself to do something wherein you are ashamed that you were given a chance to stand up for what is righteous but you succumed to the powers of unrighteousness that surround you – It will be a terrible feeling to live with.

I offer this email as a prayer unto the Lord's feet.

(I do not know if your secretary will even show you this mail or if you will take the time to read it. But i sincerely hope that you get to read this mail.)

Thanking you in advance for reversing this decision of yours.

Sincerely,

Sharon Clarke Sequeira

For the Governor of Maharastra, Protest against MF Husain

Dear Sir,

Recently I received an email from a friend. The source of the email was a spiritual organisation in India, The Sanatan Sanstha (www.sanatan.org).

The email refers to some obscene paintings of Hindu deities that have been done by the renowned painter M.F. Husain. The Sanatan Sanstha has published their protest on their website (http://www.sanatan.org/en/05/Protests/MFHusain/.

The email also states that M.F. Husain, the internationally reputed painter, is being felicitated with the prestigious Roopadhar 2006 award by the Bombay Art Society by yourself on 2 February 2006.

Some of the questions that come to mind when I read this is that if the Governor knew about this act of M.F. Husain would he still continue to endorse the award of MF Husain. The following points are some points for your consideration to stop this award and bring Husain to justice.

  1. Suppose The Prophet Mohammed was painted in the nude would you as Governor still be congratulating the painter despite protest from Muslims?
  2. This is stark contrast to an article that I recently read (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/4699847.stm) where it stated:
Police in India's Uttar Pradesh state have arrested a publisher for a sketch of the Prophet Mohammad in a book. They said the drawing was likely to cause outrage among the Muslim community as images of the Prophet are considered blasphemy in Islam.
  3. Another article http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/4670370.stm published yesterday talks about how cartoon sketches of the Prophet Mohammed have sparked diplomatic sanctions and death threats in some Arab nations.

Even though I am a Christian by birth I feel if such things are continued in a nation such as India it will lead to tensions between communities and will bring unrest in India not to mention the spiritual consequences of such actions. I urge you to act upon this issue and the 25,000 plus protests on www.sanatan.org and assist Sanatan Sanstha in bringing Husain to justice by helping them achieve what has been written in http://www.sanatan.org/en/05/Protests/MFHusain/petition.php.

Sincerely,
